Frequently Asked Questions
Is it really Women's Football?
Yes.
Do you play full-contact?
Yes. This is the real thing... helmet, shoulder pads and hip/thigh/knee
pads. It's full-contact football with NFL rules.
Do you play in a league?
Yes. We are members of the Independent Women's Football League, which has over 1600 women playing for 41 teams across the United States.
How old do you have to be?
Players must be at least 18 years old prior to the first game. We have had women up to 53 years of age.
Do you need to have medical insurance?
Yes. All players on any team in the Independent Womens Football League must have medical insurance in order to play. You cannot participate in practices or games without medical insurance.
When does your season begin and how long does it go for?
Our season begins with conditioning practices in the fall. Games begin in April and the regular season finishes in June. The postseason (playoffs) continues through July.
How many games do you play in a season?
The league schedules 8 regular season games. (Four home and four away)
When do you practice?
We begin practicing in the fall with informal conditioning practices and continue through December. In January we usually move to Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday practices. We continue practicing three days a week through the regular season with the exception of game days. Practices are really dependent on field availability.
Where do you practice?
In the past, we have practiced in Orange, Irvine, Fountain Valley and Whittier. We try to stay in central Orange County, but it is really dependent on field availability.
Where do you play your games?
Our home field in 2009 was split between Capistrano Valley High School in Mission Viejo and Irvine High School in Irvine. Our home field is announced a few months before our first game.
Does it cost me anything?
Unfortunately, yes. Each player has to purchase her own gear (helmet, shoulder pads, hip/thigh/knee pads and cleats) as a first-year player. Also, players are responsible for acquiring sponsorships to assist in player dues that cover uniforms and player-related expenses. Player sponsorship requirements could be between $300 - $400 per year.
Do you do any type of fundraising?
Yes. We schedule several fundraisers throughout the offseason and sometimes during the season. The fundraisers are designed to assist players and the team.
Do you need support personnel?
Yes, we are always looking for help! The team relies heavily on the staff that works behind the scenes; from daily administrative work to gameday operations. All of our staff members volunteer their time and services to help our organization. If you are interested in helping the team with marketing, sales, video, photography or any of our gameday operations including chain gang, play-by-play announcing, statistics, concessions, etc., please contact us.
